When I was a child, my mom had a card in her Bible that listed Bible verses. The topics discussed struggles such as dealing with lust, managing anger, battling depression, and overcoming anxious thoughts. I knew what each of those parts of life was except for anxiety and depression. There was a separate card devoted to comforting scriptures for mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. I would listen to my grandmother and mother say I could turn to the scripture for mental peace. Those helpful verses are God’s promises to all his heavy laden children in hard times. His word helps us so we can all be made perfect in his love and gain rest in him!
A Personal Experience of Struggling with Anxiety & Depression
My mother explained anxiety and depression to me as best as she could for my age. At that time of our discussion, I was 9 years old. She said that there were several examples of mental health in the Bible. They mentioned people with mental illness and bible verses for mental health issues in the Bible. I was told to read God’s word which would never return to me void, pray, and believe the Jesus Christ would provide a miracle when it came to mental illness. Look, I knew there was no way I could go through something like that. I had everything I needed and more. A few years later, at the age of 11 I had an anxiety attack. Humbly, I searched for that card in secret to find the comforting scripture quotes for mental illness since I had my first experience with anxiety.
Growing into my teenage years, I continued to deal with anxiety. After I entered junior high school, I started experiencing depression. I used to pray countless times when I was suffering from depression. I never thought to just open God’s word to find Bible verses about anxiety and depression for peace and comfort. The reminder of what my grandmother and mother said would rise up in my mind time and time again concerning Bible verses about mental strength. Fast forward through high school and undergrad, I was still dealing with anxiety and depression way more severely. Now let’s do a time jump, a serious one to the experience that led me to find comforting scriptures for mental illnesses.
A Personal Experience of Struggling with Postpartum Depression & Postpartum Anxiety
After my first Earth-side child was born, I suffered from postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety. It wasn’t until I was alone in my room at home with my son by my side that I cried out to the Lord to remove the feelings and thoughts. Within a month of my first son’s birth, I was admitted to a behavioral health hospital. During my time in the hospital, the chaplain would visit us on a daily basis. He told me how God and his righteous right hand, Lord hears the righteous cry and prayers of his children. He also told me how it was important that I read God’s word as a form of mental health Bible study.
Later that evening, I opened my Bible to find bible verses about depression and bible verses about anxiety. I learned bible scriptures on depression and bible scriptures on anxiety while I was in the behavioral health hospital after my first son was born. Each day the chaplain would give me a different bible verse about depression as well as a different bible verse about anxiety to read. I spent the next 24 hours studying those verses that would help comfort me. I wrote down the scriptures he gave me over that time and held on to them for dear life. Those comforting scriptures for mental illnesses were needed all over again while I was pregnant with my second child and after my second child’s birth.
While I was pregnant with my second Earth-side child, I experience depression and anxiety. I also dealt with postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis after my second child was born. Yeah, I was leaning on my own understanding and walking with little faith. I began to ask myself, ‘ Can God heal mental illness? ‘ It got to the point where I attempted to cut my wrist with a knife in front of my husband. I even told my Dad, that I wanted to kill myself because I just couldn’t carry on with the anxiety and depression. Calling out to Christ led me to Psalm 143 and I was instantly filled with a new song and a mustard seed of hope.
