When I was a child, My mom had a card in her Bible that listed Bible verses about life struggles and other parts of life such as building wealth, finding love, dealing with lust, and managing anger. There was a separate card devoted to comforting scriptures for mental illness such as anxiety and depression. I would listen to my grandmother and mother say that if I ever needed help with any of these matters, I could turn to the verses on that card. Those verses were God’s promises to his children and to me. I knew what each of those parts of life were except for anxiety and depression.
A Personal Experience of Struggling with Anxiety & Depression
My mother explained them both to me as best as she could for my age which was 8 or 9 at the time. She said that there were several stories and examples of mental illness in the Bible. Afterwards, I was told to read the word, pray, and believe God would provide a miracle when it came to mental illness. I dang well knew there was no way I could ever go through something like that because I had everything I needed and more. However, I had a slice of humble pie coming my way soon. Little did I know a few years later, at the age of 11 after an anxiety attack, I would pull that card out in secret to find the comforting scriptures for mental illness since I had my first experience with anxiety.
Growing into my teenage years I continued to deal with anxiety. After I entered junior high school, I started experiencing depression. I used to pray and pray countless times when I was suffering from depression. I never thought once to just open God’s word to find Bible verses about anxiety and depression for peace and comfort. The constant reminder of what my grandmother and mother said would rise up in my mind time and time again about numerous Bible verse for mental strength. Fast forward through high school and undergrad, I girl was still dealing with anxiety and depression way more severely. Now let’s do a time jump, a serious one.
A Personal Experience of Struggling with Postpartum Depression & Postpartum Anxiety
After my first Earth-side child was born, I suffered from postpartum depression. It wasn’t until I was all alone in my room with my son by my side that I opened my Bible to find verses to read about anxiety and depression. I learned scriptures about depression and anxiety while I was in the behavioral health hospital after my first son was born. During my time in the hospital, the chaplain would visit us on a daily basis. He would give me a different scripture to read and study for 24 hours that would help comfort me. I wrote down the scriptures he gave me over that time and held on to them for dear life before I left the behavioral health hospital. Those comforting scriptures for mental illness were needed all over again while I was both pregnant with my second child and after my second child’s birth.
Prenatal depression and anxiety came for me while I was pregnant with my second child. To top that off I also dealt with postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis after my second Earth side child was born. While I was reading those Bible verses I had doubt that I would never come out of the feelings a second time. That second time around with PPD, PPA, and PPP was excruciating. It got to the point where I took out a knife in front of my husband and attempted to cut my wrist. I even told my dad, my grandmother, and my mother that I wanted to kill myself because I just couldn’t carry on with the anxiety and depression. Calling out to God kept me from doing harm to myself which led me to John 3:16 and I was instantly filled with a mustard seed of hope.

Comforting Bible Scriptures For Anxiety
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
The Scripture says the best antidote for anxiety is prayer. Counteract that anxiety with the truth which comes from having a conversation and relationship with God. For me, prayer begins to shift your focus on the things that try to control my mind. What tries to control your mind has power over you. The habit of prayer releases the power of the peace of God in your mind and heart. His peaceful spirit and his everlasting words will control your heart! So while in prayer, be specific about your request in God’s will. Whether or not something has been troubling you, go to the father in Prayer about it. Give thanks in the midst of prayer and immediately after in great faith!
Matthew 6:25-26 (NIV)
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
The scripture says that the things we have anxiety about are merely superficial. The very things that we worry about are not worth troubling yourself over. God has so much more for you to care about that focuses on giving him glory. God cares that your life is centered on more than just what you have now and what you need tomorrow.
