The Bible is full of scripture for mental peace about anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

When I was a child, my mom had a card in her Bible that listed Bible verses. The topics discussed struggles such as dealing with lust, managing anger, battling depression, and overcoming anxious thoughts. I knew what each of those parts of life was except for anxiety and depression. There was a separate card devoted to comforting scriptures for mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. I would listen to my grandmother and mother say I could turn to the scripture for mental peace. Those helpful verses are God’s promises to all his heavy laden children in hard times. His word helps us so we can all be made perfect in his love and gain rest in him!

A Personal Experience of Struggling with Anxiety & Depression

My mother explained anxiety and depression to me as best as she could for my age. At that time of our discussion, I was 9 years old. She said that there were several examples of mental health in the Bible. They mentioned people with mental illness and bible verses for mental health issues in the Bible. I was told to read God’s word which would never return to me void, pray, and believe the Jesus Christ would provide a miracle when it came to mental illness. Look, I knew there was no way I could go through something like that. I had everything I needed and more. A few years later, at the age of 11 I had an anxiety attack. Humbly, I searched for that card in secret to find the comforting scripture quotes for mental illness since I had my first experience with anxiety.

Growing into my teenage years, I continued to deal with anxiety. After I entered junior high school, I started experiencing depression. I used to pray countless times when I was suffering from depression. I never thought to just open God’s word to find Bible verses about anxiety and depression for peace and comfort. The reminder of what my grandmother and mother said would rise up in my mind time and time again concerning Bible verses about mental strength. Fast forward through high school and undergrad, I was still dealing with anxiety and depression way more severely. Now let’s do a time jump, a serious one to the experience that led me to find comforting scriptures for mental illnesses.

A Personal Experience of Struggling with Postpartum Depression & Postpartum Anxiety

After my first Earth-side child was born, I suffered from postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety. It wasn’t until I was alone in my room at home with my son by my side that I cried out to the Lord to remove the feelings and thoughts. Within a month of my first son’s birth, I was admitted to a behavioral health hospital. During my time in the hospital, the chaplain would visit us on a daily basis. He told me how God and his righteous right hand, Lord hears the righteous cry and prayers of his children. He also told me how it was important that I read God’s word as a form of mental health Bible study.

Later that evening, I opened my Bible to find bible verses about depression and bible verses about anxiety. I learned bible scriptures on depression and bible scriptures on anxiety while I was in the behavioral health hospital after my first son was born. Each day the chaplain would give me a different bible verse about depression as well as a different bible verse about anxiety to read. I spent the next 24 hours studying those verses that would help comfort me. I wrote down the scriptures he gave me over that time and held on to them for dear life. Those comforting scriptures for mental illnesses were needed all over again while I was pregnant with my second child and after my second child’s birth.

While I was pregnant with my second Earth-side child, I experience depression and anxiety. I also dealt with postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis after my second child was born. That second time around with PPD, PPA, and PPP was excruciating. I had doubts that I would come out of the feelings a second time. Yeah, I was leaning on my own understanding and walking with little faith. I began to ask myself, ‘ Can God heal mental illness? ‘ It got to the point where I attempted to cut my wrist with a knife in front of my husband. I even told my Dad, that I wanted to kill myself because I just couldn’t carry on with the anxiety and depression. Calling out to Christ led me to Psalm 143 and I was instantly filled with a new song and a mustard seed of hope.

How Reading The Bible Helped Me Cope With My Mental Illnesses

Here I am, typing up this blog post about how God’s Bible verses about mental health provided me with a mustard seed of hope and faith. 10 Bible Verses of Comfort For People With Mental Illnesses

Comforting Bible Verses To Help With Anxiety

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

In this Bible verse for mental health, the scripture says the best antidote for anxiety is a prayer which makes one of many awesome bible verses for anxiety and overthinking. Counteract that anxiety with the truth which comes from having a conversation and relationship with God. For me, prayer begins to shift my focus on the things that try to control my mind. What tries to control your mind has power over you. The habit of prayer especially for prayer for mental healing scripture releases the power of the peace of God in your mind and heart. His peaceful spirit and his everlasting words will control your heart! So while in prayer, be specific about your request in God’s will. Whether or not something has been troubling you, go to the father in Prayer about it. Give thanks in the midst of prayer and immediately after in great faith!

Matthew 6:25-26 (NIV)

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

This scripture for good health says that the things we have anxiety about are merely superficial. The very things that we worry about are not worth troubling ourselves over. God has so much more for you to care about that focuses on giving him glory. God cares that your life is centered on more than just what you have now and what you need tomorrow. This Bible verse about worry and stress reminds us that all of that anxiety does nothing for you except keep you away from praising God for what you do have. If God can take care of the birds in the tree, God will always provide for you as His child. He can make the impossible possible and can do far more for you than you can even imagine.

1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

The scripture makes a clarification about the worries that come to mind in our lives. God clearly states he wants us to not have an uneasiness about anything which makes this one of many phenomenal Bible verses for mental strength. His desire is for us to live care freely and hide calming bible verses in our hearts because he wants to take on the burdens we face. Knowing this should take an excessive amount of weight off your shoulders. Handing over all those worries allows you to focus on the blessings and beauty of life.

Comforting Bible Verses To Help With Depression

Psalm 55:22 (NIV)

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

This bible verse for depression calls for anyone dealing with depression to talk to God about them. Talking to God will give you indescribable comfort that will allow you to leave the weight of those burdens with God. After that conversation, the Holy Spirit will be with you to provide continuous comfort. All you have to do is call out to the Holy Spirit. As God’s children, he does not want us upset or to lack confidence in this walk of life. God did not design us to worry or fear but made us in his image to be full of strength.

Isaiah 49:13-15 (NIV)

“Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into song, you mountains! For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones. But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.” Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”

The word of God calls for anyone dealing with depression to remember that the Lord cares for his children.  God will be present to show Mercy upon those who may have come to a place where they think he has abandoned them and forgotten about them. Knowing he will always come to remove the burden, his children on Earth and in the Heavenly Realms should rejoice and be glad. God is not like a man or woman who will forget to show unconditional love to their own flesh and blood. This scripture for depression will remind you that God is the one who will never leave you or forsake you in any situation that brings you distress.

John 14:1 (NIV)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”

Written above is one of many Bible verses for depression that is full of God’s assurance for his children when feelings of self-doubt and sadness creep into our minds. Comforting Bible Scriptures For Suicidal Thoughts

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

God’s living word has a message of encouragement for his children who struggle with suicidal thoughts. His Bible verses for struggle assure that God guards you against the threat of the enemy. God is with you as you face the unimaginable which can surely be scary at times. This bible verse on suicide tells us the fear that comes does not have to intimidate you because he is not going to let you down to the point where you feel so discouraged to end it all. When you are at that point when you feel that no one else understands God will Be with you every step of the way. Do not give in to the darkness because he is your guide to get to the light.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

The text of God holds a promise for any of God’s children who feel like they want to cause harm to themselves. A promise of a declaration from the Lord to take care of you. God has made a declaration with this Bible verse for health that he knows exactly what to do for your life. This means his plans are designed for your life story. As one of the many Bible verses on suicide, the word has every intention of taking you on a path where he will always be with you because he does not want any type of harm to come your way from anyone or anything. God shall ensure you flourish in the future.

Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

For anyone who is contemplating a disastrous act against themself, know that this is not what God has set out for you. God has called you to have strength and courage as you walk in the world. Most importantly, he has commanded that you walk in this earthly realm without fear. As another one of the many Bible verses for suicide, there is no uncertainty with the God of the universe. The God you know personally and vice versa is taking every step you take right along with you. That means whatever you face, God faces and he will command you to overcome it which makes this one of several great bible verses for mental breakdowns.

A Comforting Bible Scripture For Anxiety, Depression, & Suicidal Thoughts

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”

He is the one who will ensure that peace is in your mind and heart all the days of your life, in every imaginable and unimaginable way possible. 1. My mental health problems have been a bit challenging for me lately
I wake up with a heavy feeling in my chest about every morning- today being no different. I have struggled alot more with my mental health problems since losing my mom back in 2020. Now as we are just a couple of days away from Thanksgiving, I feel as if I’m about to lose it. I came to the internet to search for spiritual help for these types of issues and am so grateful I came upon this page..

    1. Hi There Marissa! First and foremost, thanks so much for stopping by my space here on the internet. I am absolutely blessed to hear that you found this blog post at a time when you needed it most. I pray it has helped you overcome the mental health challenges you have been facing lately. I also pray to God that you are able to find constant comfort in his word whenever you face any future mental health challenges or struggles. I am sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. May her beautiful spirit rest peacefully in God’s arms. And know this, you are gonna make it through just take it one moment at a time if you have to. Love, Natalie Nicole

  2. I have been struggling with depression since early childhood! And I find that now at 35 the trauma I have experienced is effecting me strongly today I as constant battles with feeling like the black sheep of the family and dealing with constant judgement (with secret animosity! I’ve always felt that when your confident and content with you and walk in your truth other admire it yet despises you for it at the same time so you always have a target on your back ! I grew to learn the enemy plays on my emotions hard ! As a grown woman I find myself still emotionally immature looking to fill the void in my heart ! Everyday I feel this overwhelming feeling but I tell myself keep going I pray and the enemy interferes with that God please intervene! Those who know the lord please pray for me ! I just want to find my way live on Jesus terms and prosper in life because I am a mother and I’m now responsible for three others lives mental and emotional well being ! Thank you for the guidance in scriptures

  3. Hello Shay, I thought I would say hello and that I think you are on the right track by your mentioning the Lord Jesus Christ and visiting this web site. You see I was visiting the web site also looking for particular promises that God has given us for my own simular use! I have delt with serious depression for longer than you have been alive. Let me just say the most important thing we will ever do is except the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour by going to Him or our Heavenly Father in prayer and asking for His saving grace, His work on the cross where He was judged in our place, and ask the Father for the gift of salvation, that you need it, you want it and thank you for His grace provision where He has removed the eminity between us by the judgement of His sinless Son in our place. Eph.2:8,9 Realize that you will become a child of God and will be indwelt by God the Holy Spirit at the moment you first believed and sealed by Him forever! Eph.1:13 I suggest you collect these valuable promises He has given us, learn them and rely on them. It is important that you take in His word that in time will stabilize you! Get close to God and stay close to Him, He needs to be your rock, your refuge. I tell you these things that I believe are truth to not only help you but help myself who is still dealing with my own struggles, for one in hope that I might glorify our Lord Jesus Christ who I want to honour and of coarse to hopefully help you. Let me say it takes time to inculcate Gods word and finding a good church a pastor who is on the right track can be a job in its self. There is good minister I might suggest that I listen to streaming on line at Another good minister who streams on Spodify is Rick Hughes these are non-denominational pastors, they are independant teachers of God’s word. May God bless you! Mike

  4. I just ran across ur website and it is wonderfull to find a website on mental health and Jesus. The reason I say that is i have been told by my church that i am demon possessed or its unconfessed sin. I did so much better with my mental health when i was involved in Gods house. Except when i went to our church counselor and was told this hog wash. Also when they found out my mental health problems all the friends i thought i had in Church wanted nothing to do with me. I so wanna go back to Church but i am fearful it will happen again in another Church. I read and study my Bible at home because i have so much anxiety about being judged again. I isolate myself from the world because no one likes me when they get to know me.

    1. Hi Anna! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I have been so blessed to hear that you have found comfort in the content God has used me for to share with others. May I suggest seeking out a small group of friends who study the Bible like you? Ask fellow acquaintances if they know anyone interested in joining a small Bible study group. You have to be the change you wish to see in the world. If you need more support, I suggest signing up for my newsletter. I pray God keeps you, that the blood of Jesus covers you, and that the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart always!
